Tirthankar Ghosal

Staff Scientist (HPC and AI)

Dr. Tirthankar Ghosal is a staff scientist at the Advanced AI Methods at Scale (AAIMS) group within the National Center for Computational Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research portfolio encompasses two primary domains: AI for Science (AI4S) and AI for Operations (AI4Ops).

In the AI4S domain, Dr. Ghosal specializes in scientific hypothesis generation, developing Large Language Models (LLMs) for scientific applications across astrophysics, material science, and chemistry, and advancing agentic AI for scientific discovery. His work supports domain scientists in addressing complex scientific challenges through the integration of artificial intelligence and computational resources. Dr. Ghosal maintains active collaborations with leading researchers from prestigious institutions including The Ohio State University, Stanford University, MIT, NASA/ADS, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Pennsylvania State University, Old Dominion University, Allen Institute for AI, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Stony Brook University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

As Principal Investigator of the AI4Ops initiative at ORNL, Dr. Ghosal leads a multidisciplinary team addressing critical operational challenges for ORNL and the Department of Energy. Key projects include hazardous event forecasting, high-risk property identification, proposal review optimization, Activity-Based Work Control streamlining, S&T matrix classification, semantic information retrieval, and image clustering for neutron science. These initiatives leverage cutting-edge AI advances to enhance internal ORNL and DOE operational capabilities, with collaborative partnerships extending to DOE Headquarters and sister laboratories.

Dr. Ghosal earned his doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, specializing in Natural Language Processing. He completed postdoctoral research at the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics (ÚFAL) at Charles University in the Czech Republic. Prior to joining ORNL, he served as Head of Research at SciSpace, a Palo Alto-based company, where he directed a team of NLP researchers addressing computational challenges in scientific article processing to mitigate scholarly information overload.

Dr. Ghosal contributes extensively to the academic community through leadership roles as organizer and area chair for premier conferences in NLP, AI, and scholarly communication, including ACL, INLG, EMNLP, IJCAI, and FORCE11. He has organized numerous workshops (SDP, WASP, ArgKG, SummDial, METRICS) and spearheaded shared tasks and generation challenges (AutoMin, MuP, DEAL, SciVer, FOCAL, TRACS).

Dr. Ghosal has also teaches "Generative AI, LLMs, NLP" at the University of Tennessee Knoxville with a DOE-EERE grant under University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII).

Beyond his professional commitments, Dr. Ghosal dedicates quality time to his family, particularly enjoying activities with his three-year-old daughter. His personal interests include reading Bengali literature, traveling, and preparing traditional Indian cuisine.
