Bio
Dr. Shaileyee Bhattacharya is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Used Fuel and Nuclear Material Disposition (UFNMD) group within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Her research focuses on understanding the behavior and integrity of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) under storage and disposal conditions, with particular emphasis on post-irradiation examination and microstructural characterization. Her work includes the development of experimental testing methodologies, conducting experiments with SNF at the Irradiated Fuels Examination Laboratory (IFEL), and analysis and interpretation of experimental data.
Shaileyee received her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, in 2024. Her doctoral research focused on determining the crystallographic structure and chemical speciation of irradiated fuels and zirconium-based cladding materials using synchrotron X-ray analytical techniques. The thesis work was carried out at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland. She earned her M.S. in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R) in 2019. Her master's research, carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI CPfS) in Dresden, Germany, centered on the growth of high-purity single-crystals of topological materials and characterization of their electrical resistivity and magnetic transport properties.
