Ryan J Morelock

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Hello! I'm Ryan, a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Center for Nanophase Materials Science. My work focuses on using Python to automate workflows for multi-scale modeling, including DFT, molecular dynamics, and machine learning, to synthesize novel 2D heterostructures with applications as topological superconductors.

During my Ph.D. and postdoc at the University of Colorado Boulder, I used DFT to model perovskite materials for solarthermal hydrogen production and solar cells. My journey in materials science research began as an undergraduate at The University of Alabama, which included a summer REU appointment at Georgia State University.

I excel at diving deep into complex topics, advancing the field through impactful research, and effectively communicating my findings. I've co-authored four first-author papers and have presented at major conferences like ACS, AIChE, COMBI, and MRS.

I’m passionate about mentorship and environmental stewardship. At ORNL, I've helped two summer graduate interns generate data and develop their computational research skills. Outside of the lab, I've worked on several outdoor rehabilitation projects through the organization Volunteer East Tennessee.
