Nina Maria Gottschling joined ORNL as Distinguished Staff Fellow in 2025, working in the Quantum Communications and Networking group at the Computational Sciences and Engineering division.
Dr. Nina M. Gottschling is a Wigner Fellow at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Previously, she served as a team lead and postdoctoral researcher at the German Aerospace Center near Munich, Germany. She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Her doctoral thesis, titled “On existence, stability, accuracy and learning of approximate decoders for ill-posed inverse problems,” examined theoretical foundations and learning-based approaches to reconstruction methods for ill-posed inverse problems. Dr. Gottschling holds a M.Sc. in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics from the Ludwig Maximilian University and Technical University of Munich. She also earned a B.Sc. in Physics, and a B.A. in Philosophy from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. As an early-career scientist, she was selected to participate in the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Physics in 2024.
At ORNL, Nina works on accuracy bounds for solutions to regression and classification problems by extending previous work on inverse problems.
