Bio
Matt has nearly 20 years of experience in newspaper and multimedia journalism in the Southeast. He has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Tennessee and Virginia press associations, and the Tennessee Associated Press.
Before joining ORNL in 2019, Matt worked as a reporter and editor for the Knoxville News Sentinel, where he covered breaking news and investigative stories in East Tennessee and statewide. He also worked at the Bristol Herald Courier in Virginia and the Dalton Daily Citizen in Georgia.
His writing has explored topics that range from the opioid-abuse epidemic to wrongful convictions to the Gatlinburg wildfire of 2016. He was named Journalist of the Year by the Tennessee Associated Press in 2017.
