John R Haines
Second Target Station Project Director
John Haines has more than 30 years' experience leading project teams in performing R&D, design, fabrication/construction, installation, and testing activities for technologically challenging systems and projects in aerospace, fusion energy, and most recently, in spallation neutron sources in the US and Europe.
Before joining the STS Project in 2019, John was the Project Manager for the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden. Prior to leaving Oak Ridge in 2013, John held key management positions including Director of ORNL’s Neutron Facilities Development Division. In this role, he was responsible for development of facilities and capabilities associated with neutron science through R&D on accelerator, target, and neutron techniques and managing projects to design and construct neutron scattering instruments, target facilities, and accelerator facilities. John was also part of the original SNS project team, being responsible for the SNS Target Station when the project was completed in 2006.
John received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, MS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.
