Guillermo I Maldonado
Associate Professor and UT/ORNL Joint Faculty
Dr. Maldonado has been actively affiliated with the US nuclear industry for roughly 25 years. He began his career in naval reactor core design at the GE Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Subsequently, he obtained Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering from NC State University. His doctoral research in nuclear fuel management optimization led to a postdoctoral position with Electricité de France in Paris, and ultimately to Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor. In 1999, he joined GE Nuclear Energy as a Technical Program Manager, and in 2003 rejoined academics as an Associate Professor with the University of Cincinnati, after which Dr. Maldonado joined UTNE under a Joint Faculty Appointment with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he has been for the past 8.5 years. His externally funded research projects as an academician have led to the mentorship and support of 13 PhD and 32 MS degrees, while he currently advises 6 PhD and 2 MS candidates. Dr. Maldonado has published over 155 peer-reviewed articles with his students and colleagues, is a consultant to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s ACRS, Guest Editor to the Progress in Nuclear Energy journal, and has served as the Technical Program Chair and in all the leadership roles leading up to the Chair of the Reactor Physics Division (RPD) of the American Nuclear Society (ANS).
