G R Wetherington Jr

R&D staff, Dynamic Systems Analysis

Randall Wetherington is a senior development engineer in the Flow, Thermal and Data Science Group of the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division in the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate. He specializes in the application of advanced data processing methods for understanding the dynamic behavior of mechanical systems and extracting knowledge from experimental data.

He joined ORNL in 1977 and led the Real-Time Systems Group in the Instrument and Controls Division from 1995-2001. From 2001-2021, he was a senior development engineer with the Electrical and Electronic Systems Research Division.

Wetherington uses advanced computing methods to identify and extract features in data, especially related to rotating machines and electrical power monitoring. He also designs and implements high-speed data acquisition solutions for acquiring data persistently. This includes any required data-flow pipelines and analytics to store and process the data in real-time. Wetherington has extensive experience in the design and integration of large complex real-time data processing systems, as well as advanced automation systems.

A Project Management Professional (Certificate 472715 2008-2011), Wetherington has received five awards during his time at ORNL, including the Outstanding Management Achievement Award in 1996. With B.S. Weil, he holds a 1985 patent (4,544,839) for a laser beam monitoring system. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee.
