Ahmed Elatar is a mechanical engineering R&D Associate Staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He is passionate about creating a better future and is known for his dedication, leadership skills, and adaptability in various work environments. Ahmed has a solid knowledge base in engineering science, and he possesses a keen eye for detail. He consistently meets project tasks and deadlines and has exceptional professional communication skills. 

Ahmed's education includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt.

Currently, Ahmed is serving as an R&D Associate Staff since 04/2019 at ORNL. In this role, he is developing and researching HVAC equipment to enhance performance while minimizing harmful emissions. His responsibilities include writing research proposals, collaborating with industry partners, applying for research grants, creating project plans, team management, sharing knowledge, and conducting data analysis and characterization. 

Before his current role, Ahmed worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada, providing consulting services for Wind Engineering projects. Additionally, he was a Research and Design Associate at S2e Technology Incorporation in London, ON, Canada, and a Mechanical Design Engineer at Dr. Abdel-Hamid El-Sayed Consulting in Alexandria, Egypt. 

Ahmed has received recognition for his contributions through various awards and scholarships, including the George C. Briley ASHRAE 2019 Award for the Journal Article "Setting Charge Limits for Flammable Refrigerants" and an ASME Certificate of Appreciation for Services.

  • I develop building equipment for better performance and less energy consumption
  • I test environmentally friendly refrigerants in a variety of equipment
  • I assess and characterize the risk associated with flammable refrigerant leaks
  • I conduct experimental and numerical investigations of frost growth on surfaces to find successful defrosting techniques

The University of Western Ontario - Postdoctoral Fellow

I have worked at WindEEE Research Institute on the following tasks:

  • I tested experimentally the effect of direct wind, tornados, and downbursts on structures
  • I characterized the wind load on solar panels for aerodynamic optimization and wind load reduction
  • I studied wind-assisted natural ventilation inside an atrium building
