Walth named IEEE senior member

Published:

Carlen Walth of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been named a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. IEEE, one of the world’s largest technical professional organizations, is dedicated to improving global conditions through technological innovation. Senior members, who make up about 8% of the membership, are recognized for their extensive experience and exceptional personal accomplishment.

Walth, an electrical instrumentation and controls engineer in the Enrichment Systems Engineering Group in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division of the Isotope Science and Enrichment Directorate, joined ORNL in 2022. He previously worked in the aerospace and industrial electronics manufacturing fields in California.

In his current position, Walth supports research and development of technology for national security applications and cancer treatments. He supports projects including the Domestic Uranium Enrichment Centrifuge Experiment (DUECE); the Stable Isotope Production and Research Facility (SIPF); and the Stable Isotope Production and Research Center (SIPRC). His focus is on hardware: printed circuit boards, electrical panels and instrumentation.

He also serves as a derivative classifier with Uncontrolled Nuclear Information Reviewing Authority, an electrical equipment inspector, an alternative lab space manager and principal investigator on research projects.

Walth holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California State University in Long Beach.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit https://energy.gov/science.
