Greenwood selected for ANS Early Career Excellence Award

New honor recognizes leadership in energy system modeling

Scott Greenwood, a research staff member in the Advanced Reactor Systems Group at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the American Nuclear Society Operations and Power Division’s Early Career Excellence Award. He will receive this honor during the ANS Annual Conference in Denver, May 31 to June 3.  

The award honors early career professionals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to nuclear operations, advanced reactor development, safety innovation or energy systems integration.

Greenwood is being recognized for his contributions to nuclear operations and advanced reactor development. His leadership in dynamic system modeling, integrated energy systems analysis and safety-focused digital innovation has strengthened the operational credibility of advanced reactors, informed DOE deployment programs and advanced tools that improve system performance, flexibility and safety.

Greenwood has more than a decade of experience building digital twins for applications such as nuclear reactor systems and supercomputers. In his role, he leads the development and application of advanced tools and workflows in a variety of areas, enabling the rapid prototyping and system-level evaluation of diverse energy system concepts. He has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications on topics including digital twin frameworks for liquid-cooled supercomputers and immersive radiation training systems, reflecting expertise in nuclear systems design and advanced computational tools.

Greenwood earned a doctorate and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Brigham Young University.
