On July 16, Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Physical Sciences Directorate celebrated the outstanding contributions of PSD technicians at this year’s Annual Technician Awards luncheon. The event honored individuals and teams who have demonstrated exceptional skill, mentorship, integrity, and commitment to safety within the organization. Here’s a recap of the award recipients and their remarkable achievements.
Major Equipment Installation Award: Mike Terry
Mike Terry, a member of the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), was recognized for his pivotal role in the installation and testing of fatigue testing machines for the Delayed Hydride Cracking project at the Low Activation Materials Design and Analysis (LAMDA) Laboratory. Mike has been a driving force behind this effort, ensuring a smooth overhaul of the fatigue testing machines. His expertise in installation and testing not only led to significant advancements but also resulted in a key ORNL report, paving the way for the acquisition of four additional machines.
Best Technician Mentor Award: Shawn Reeves
Shawn Reeves was recognized for her leadership at the Center of Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), where she stands out as an exceptional mentor, guiding numerous technicians in microscopy, lab operations, and sample preparation. Her extensive knowledge and approachable demeanor have created a culture of learning and teamwork. Core Values Award for Impact Through Outstanding Contributions: Ryan Dalton
MSTD’s Ryan Dalton was honored for his outstanding technical skills and positive attitude, both of which have significantly aided the advancement of the organization’s research initiatives. His work on fusion-ready materials and challenging vanadium alloys has propelled projects from the lab into large-scale applications. Ryan’s dedication and problem-solving abilities have been instrumental to the success of multiple research projects, solidifying his reputation.
Core Values Award for Integrity: Leslie Wilson
Leslie Wilson of CNMS earned recognition for her unwavering integrity in balancing her responsibilities within the SNS and CNMS. She exhibited exceptional organizational skills and teamwork, navigating challenges with a positive attitude. Leslie stepped up during critical project phases, delivering complex membrane devices with remarkable efficiency. Her commitment to integrity and collaboration makes her a trusted team member and a quiet but powerful force behind the scenes.
Core Values Award for Safety: Buddy Parker
Buddy Parker, a technician at the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), was honored for his tireless commitment to maintaining a safe working environment. Buddy embodies a culture of safety, keeping the team one step ahead of potential hazards through diligence, vigilance, and a questioning attitude.
Core Values Award for Teamwork: Selena Gilland and Kelly McKamey
Selena Gilland and Kelly McKamey, both of CSD, were recognized for their exceptional collaboration on mission-critical initiatives. They successfully supported key projects such as the ISO 17025 audit and the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation inspection. Their commitment to data quality, procedure refinement, and teamwork exemplifies dedication to ORNL’s mission.
One ORNL Award: Tracie Lowe
MSTD’s Tracie Lowe was honored for her sincerity, meticulousness, and skill across various characterization techniques, contributing significantly to multiple LDRD projects. Her expertise allowed her to tackle complex challenges, helping the team meet project goals on time. Tracie’s attention to detail and positive attitude supercharge the research efforts of her team.
Best New Technician Award: Stewart Marsh
Stewart Marsh of MSTD was recognized for his exemplary integrity, safety commitment, and ability to adapt quickly to change. Despite having no prior experience, he mastered mechanical testing and took the initiative to lead new instrument projects while also developing custom tools for the lab. Stewart’s proactive problem-solving and dedication to teamwork have earned him accolades during the short time he has been at the lab.
