The program provides paid, mentored research appointments aligned with Department of Energy mission priorities in high-performance computing, AI and machine learning, data science, quantum computing, and other critical technologies central to the Genesis Mission. PCIP is structured as a summer-only experience and is available exclusively to students who have not previously completed internships at ORNL, creating a dedicated entry point into the laboratory’s computing ecosystem. Appointments are full-time and typically span 10 weeks during the summer term.

At ORNL, PCIP interns are embedded within computational research teams supporting large-scale modeling and simulation, AI-enabled science, cybersecurity, scientific software development, and advanced data analytics. Interns receive structured mentorship from computing professionals and gain hands-on experience developing algorithms, optimizing code, managing complex data workflows, and advancing scalable computing solutions. PCIP provides a clearly defined, summer-focused pathway for first-time ORNL interns seeking immersive experience in national laboratory computing.
