Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics

Mission Statement: The Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics (BBI) group develops computational methods and AI enabled tools for biomedical research, leveraging high-performance computing to solve complex, real-world challenges. Our interdisciplinary collaborations connect healthcare professionals with specialists in the formal, biological, computational, and physical sciences, ensuring that our research remains rooted in both innovative discovery and practical application.  Our tools utilize multi-scale health and environmental data for real-world deployment in health care systems and public health operations, enabling near real-time disease diagnosis, surveillance, and treatment. Through our work on synthetic medical data generation and privacy preserving federated learning, we have developed expertise in developing privacy-preserving AI methods. Through our work with heterogenous health and environmental data, we have developed expertise in data curation and AI readiness. This collection of expertise furthers our mission of providing accurate, actionable insights to detect, track, and mitigate emerging health threats effectively.

Looking forward, the BBI group is well positioned to drive innovation at DOE through the development of next-generation computational tools. These next-generation tools will support scientists, clinicians, and public health experts in developing a more comprehensive understanding of human health and the driving factors influencing disparate health outcomes. Our research enables faster, more accurate solutions for disease prevention, personalized treatment, and safeguarding individuals and communities from biological and environmental threats. Our work goes beyond healthcare, offering solutions to managing sensitive information, spatiotemporal and time-series data, detecting anomalies, and applying causal machine learning, advancing energy resilience and human security.
