Recent private investments in advanced reactor technology include several molten salt reactor (MSR) concepts. Many of these concepts tout improved safety and fuel cycle outcomes with respect to traditional light water reactors. Understanding the unique characteristics in these systems is important for regulators and reactor designers. This presentation will introduce safety characteristics and challenges unique to MSRs, reactor physics phenomena necessary for accurate MSR modeling and simulation, and potential fuel cycle outcomes for thermal and fast spectrum MSR systems.
