Abstract

Innovation is needed in the nuclear industry, and it will come in the form of inherently safe reactors that are thoroughly understood prior to construction; that are assembled using modern, low-cost techniques; and that are operated, monitored, and controlled with greater accuracy and precision. Molten salt reactors (MSRs) offer the potential to revolutionize nuclear power. The Department of Energy has begun a formal campaign to examine MSRs as candidate advanced reactors beginning in FY 2018. The challenges to be addressed and the plans to address them will be discussed.
