Abstract

The DOE-EERE Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) has recently awarded leadership of Powertrain Materials Core Program (PMCP) to ORNL as part of the Sustainable Transportation Program. The speaker will introduce the structure and objectives of the PMCP, a five-year, $30M, multiple-laboratory program, and he will describe potential opportunities that it presents for ORNL staff. The PMCP will build on recent successes in ORNL alloy development in partnership with VTO. Its primary focus will be on accelerated development of advanced alloys and processes that enable design and manufacturing of higher-efficiency internal combustion engines for light- and heavy-duty vehicles. It will emphasize accelerated development of affordable new materials by leveraging ORNL’s expertise in alloy design for extreme environments with modern integrated computational materials engineering approaches as well as the advanced characterization capabilities of ORNL, Argonne National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
