Associate Laboratory Director for Neutron Sciences

Jon Taylor is the Associate Laboratory Director for the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he leads ORNL’s world-class neutron scattering user facilities, including the Spallation Neutron Source and the High Flux Isotope Reactor. In this role, Taylor integrates cutting-edge scientific computing, data management, and emerging artificial intelligence technologies to advance discovery-driven research across the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.

Taylor’s career in condensed matter physics and neutron science spans more than 25 years, with experience as a researcher and senior leader at major international facilities. Before joining ORNL, he spent over a decade at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in the U.K., followed by leadership roles at the European Spallation Source in Sweden, where he oversaw the Neutron Scattering Systems Division and the Data Management and Software Centre.

Taylor joined ORNL in 2022 as Program Manager for Neutron Data and Computing, later becoming Director of the Neutron Scattering Division in 2023.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from De Montfort University in Leicester, England, and completed his doctorate in condensed matter physics at Loughborough University in 2000.
