Career Opportunities in Water Power Research

Posted: October 3, 2018

Structural Engineer

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a structural research engineer with depth of knowledge, experience, and creativity to design, model, review, and validate innovative modular hydraulic structures. These structures must be capable of withstanding the static and dynamic loads incurred in riverine environments, with the possibility of applying such innovations to marine renewable energy research and development. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with senior research engineers, scientists, and analysts to advance innovative modular water infrastructure components within and beyond the Standard Modular Hydropower (SMH) research and development project (http://hydropower.ornl.gov/smh), which targets future low-head hydropower facilities with standardized, interchangeable modules designed to match the essential nature of streams and to minimize the effects of hydropower to the surrounding environment.

Electro-Mechanical Water Power Research Engineer

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an engineer with depth of knowledge, experience,
and creativity to support and lead research into electro-mechanical hydropower equipment design, performance analysis, reliability
modeling, and data-driven operation and maintenance (O&M) strategies. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with senior research engineers, scientists, and analysts to advance innovative hydropower technologies and O&M strategies from concept to development to pilot testing. This researcher will be a key collaborator among ORNL’s teams focused on water power technology, advanced manufacturing, sensors and controls, systems engineering, and electric power systems engineering.
