Campus and Community

Nestled in the scenic hills of Tennessee, the ORNL campus is more than just a research facility — it’s a thriving hub of innovation, collaboration, and discovery. Home to world-class laboratories and cutting-edge scientific infrastructure, ORNL brings together top researchers and scientists from over 70 countries, united in the pursuit of breakthroughs that shape the future.

Beyond the lab, ORNL offers a welcoming and dynamic campus experience. On-site dining options make it easy to grab a meal or a snack between projects, while miles of campus walking trails and employee-friendly facilities provide space to recharge and connect with nature.

It’s a place where groundbreaking science meets a supportive, inspiring environment — all in one of the most beautiful corners of the country.

At ORNL, fostering a welcoming community is at the heart of who we are. Interns are encouraged to take part in ORNL’s Resource Groups — vibrant, supportive communities that bring together individuals from across the lab to connect, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships beyond the research setting.

These groups offer a valuable opportunity to expand your network, explore shared interests, and engage with the voices that make ORNL such a dynamic place to learn and grow. Here, you’re not just part of a lab — you’re part of a community.

ORNL offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and vibrant city life. Just an hour from the Great Smoky Mountains — the most visited national park in the U.S. — the campus is ideal for outdoor adventures, from hiking to kayaking.

ORNL is also within a day’s drive of major East Coast cities, offering access to both world-class research and diverse cultural experiences. Oak Ridge features 150 miles of shoreline for water recreation, while nearby Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee and a lively downtown filled with dining, music, festivals, and the arts.

With a cost of living 8% below the national average and no state income tax, East Tennessee is as affordable as it is inspiring.
