The Clifford G. Shull Fellowship was named for ORNL neutron scientist and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Clifford Shull, who with Bertram Brockhouse of Canada was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics. Shull won the award for his pioneering work in neutron scattering, a technique that reveals where atoms are and how they behave within a material.

The Clifford G. Shull Fellowship Program is aimed at attracting new scientific talent to ORNL and its neutron science programs, making it possible for these outstanding new scientists to continue on the path to excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S. Department of Energy missions and goals. 


The Shull Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering that utilize neutron techniques and/or advance neutron science including accelerator science, and the physical, chemical, materials, biological, nuclear, and medical sciences.  Outstanding candidates possessing related expertise are also welcome to apply.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD. in condensed matter physics, accelerator science, chemistry, materials science and engineering, biology, or related field.  Outstanding candidates possessing related expertise are also encouraged to apply.
  • Your PhD graduation should be within five years of this application and you must complete all degree requirements before starting the appointment.  Certain exceptions may be considered.
  • Current ORNL postdoctoral appointees and staff members are not eligible to apply
  • Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a significant publication record

Additional Requirements:

In addition to a CV, you must submit three letters of recommendation and a short (2-3 page) statement of research specifically describing the role that neutron scattering or accelerator enabling science will play in achieving your research goals.
