Information on the Virtual Human Project

The Virtual Human concept surfaced in 1996 among ORNL research staff. Efforts to promote it within ORNL and externally developed and expanded throughout 1997 and 1998. In 1999, Dr. Alvin Trivelpiece, then Laboratory Director, catalyzed a workshop held at the National Academy of Sciences on October 28 with scientific leaders and federal agency representatives. They considered the question whether the time is right for a national initiative in comprehensive integrated human modeling and simulation. Workshop participants strongly supported the Virtual Human concept and a request was made for a National Academy study and report to Congress. Shortly thereafter a Virtual Human Roadmapping Workshop was held in Rockville, Maryland, sponsored by ORNL and the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate of the Department of Defense. Our attention of late has been focused on the DARPA Virtual Soldier Project.

A review article on the Virtual Human Project was published in the ORNL Review.
