Research Interests
Research interests center on the field of condensed matter physics; specifically the study of martensitic behavior, magnetism and superconductivity in a wide variety of materials. This interest is based on the use of the techniques of neutron scattering. Elastic measurements are employed to study the lattice and magnetic structure, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements are used to provide detailed information on lattice and spin dynamics.
Recent areas of study involve novel materials, which have properties of an eventual applied nature but are presently widely investigated for fundamental reasons. These materials include systems that exhibit ionic conduction, the magneto caloric effect, magnetostriction, shape memory, Invar behavior and negative thermal expansion. Almost without exception these materials have very interesting structural and/or magnetic behavior as a function of temperature or magnetic field or both. Neutrons are an extremely useful tool in probing such materials. Neutron measured dispersion curves give insight to the dynamics of the system, the electron-phonon interaction and hence superconductivity. With elastic neutron measurements, details of structural and magnetic behavior can be pinpointed in more detail than by bulk measurements.
