Functional Materials for Energy

The Critical Materials Institute: a DOE Energy Innovation Hub

DOE recently awarded an Energy Innovation Hub to address the research and development needs associated with critical materials, those which have the potential to impede green energy technologies due to scarcity or supply chain uncertainty. ORNL is a core partner in the resulting Critical Materials Institute (CMI) led by the Ames Laboratory. CMI spans disciplines across ORNL, with the largest effort located in the PSD. This poster will give a brief summary of the strategy employed by CMI to address materials criticality throughout the materials lifecycle, and highlight the contributions from PSD staff to all of the Hub’s Focus Areas, which target diversifying the supply chain, developing substitute materials, improving reuse and recycling, and cross-‐cutting research to support all Focus Areas. The work involves synthesis, characterization and computational efforts which range from basic science to the development of manufacturing techniques.
