The figure depicts the rapid growth of mapping data from 1973, when 64 genes were reported, through 1994 (as of 10/28/94), when over 40,000 genes and markers were submitted to the Genome Data Base. Nearly 60,000 genes and markers have been collected in all. Types of markers include D-segments-arbitrary DNA segments of unknown function-such as RFLPs and short tandem repeat polymorphisms. Before 1991, all mapping data were gathered at Human Gene Mapping Workshops; data from 1991-94 were submitted to Genome Data Base.
