The database visualization tool VxInsightT was used to cluster and visualize two sets of data from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These included Spellman's cell-cycle data and data obtained in our laboratory examining gene expression during exit from stationary phase. Microarray hybridization data were ordinated using correlation, after Eisen, and displayed in VxInsightT. Chromatin genes expressed in S-phase are shown to group closely together in this 2D visualization environment, as expected. This visualization paradigm can be used to identify uncharacterized genes that are closely grouped with well studied genes, for example genes associated with stationary phase. VxInsightT automatically assembles HTML pages with expression plots and with the associated links into the Proteome database. Further development of this capability will enable faster and more user-friendly interpretation of huge volumes of microarray data.
