John Scaglione is a research and development staff member in the Radiation Transport and Criticality Group in the Nuclear Science and Technology Division. He received Bachelor and Master Degrees in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida. His Master’s research thesis was on the economics of going to an ultra- high burnup fuel cycle. After graduate school, from 1998 to 2006, Mr. Scaglione worked for Framatome Cogema Fuels and Bechtel SAIC Company, LLC, which were the prime contractors for the Yucca Mountain Project. During this time he performed commercial reactor core-follow and criticality safety analyses supporting the commercial spent nuclear fuel (SNF) disposal licensing activities. Prior to joining ORNL in 2008, Mr. Scaglione was a technical consultant to Sandia National Laboratory where he developed the postclosure criticality licensing basis and authored the Yucca Mountain Project license application Safety Analysis Report sections involving the application of burnup credit and a probabilistic assessment of the occurrence of a nuclear criticality event in the repository. He is currently the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) Lead Laboratory for Repository Systems, Criticality Department Manager where his responsibilities include license application defense and maintenance of the postclosure criticality licensing basis for DOE-owned SNF, high-level waste, and commercial SNF. His areas of expertise and interest include spent fuel disposal, burnup credit, criticality safety, and spent fuel characterization.
