SHADESThe goal of this one-day workshop is to attract 6th and 7th grade girls to careers in science and engineering by showing the students that math, physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering disciplines are "fun" and interesting. The program is highly interactive, with demonstration- oriented exhibits and presentations on science and engineering topics. Speakers are engineers and scientists from local professional societies, academia, and corporations who want to motivate young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. There is also a teachers' program. The topics for the workshop will include 5 general areas: life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and computers, high tech engineering and everyday engineering. Specific areas that may be included are botany, biology, physics, genetics, materials science, mathematics/statistics, environmental issues, accounting, computer science, civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical and nuclear engineering, and robotics. There is an $8 fee for this conference to help defray the cost of lunches and T-shirts, featuring the SHADES logo, which will be given to each participant and will be available in large and extra large sizes. This brochure may be copied as necessary. Please pass it on to any middle school math and science teachers and to any interested girls. Priority will be given to girls who have not previously attended.SHADES is partially funded by grants from the American Association of University Women Education Foundation and the American Nuclear Society, as well as by the member organizations of the Coalition. The teacher's program will include a brief presentation that clearly shows what's happening to our girls in middle school classrooms. The teachers will also attend a session in which they will learn techniques for making math and science more interesting and they will attend student sessions of their choice. Please note that students may come without their teachers and teachers may come without their students. If you register and you do NOT hear from us, we expect to see you on November 12, 2011. If you include a self-addressed stamped postcard, registration will be confirmed. The first 100 registrations will be accepted, and a place will be reserved for you. The $8 fee, which is non-refundable, helps defray the cost of T-shirts, lunches, and program packets. Notification of closure of registration when the 100-participant limit is reached will be made to registrants. |
