Ph.D., Research Staff |
Research Interests: Dr. Yamamoto received his Ph. D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, in March 1999. After nine years of professional experience as a physical metallurgist in Japan and in the United States, he joined the Materials Processing Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a research staff member. His research focuses on a development of metal-based structural materials, especially Ti-, Fe-, and Ni-base alloys, to be used for automotive parts, aircraft, and recuperator/tubing in energy conversion systems such as fossil/nuclear power plants. He is currently working to achieve a near net shape manufacturing process of Ti powder laser coating on steel plates, development of advanced austenitic stainless steels, and an alloy design of alumina-forming austenitic stainless steel alloys. His expertise in the areas of microstructure characterization and phase equilibrium is used to guide the improvements of processing procedure, mechanical properties and the material qualities of commercial developed materials.
