Mission

The Processing & Joining Group of the Materials Science & Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory performs basic research through the processing of a wide range of metallic, ceramic, structural, and functional materials.  The group advances the "Process Science" through development of innovative processing methods, process modeling coupled with experimental research, and operation of unique materials processing facilities. To advance the science and technology of materials joining by developing welding and brazing procedures for a variety of materials and by studying the fundamentals of joining processes and their effects on the microstructure and properties of materials and to develop advanced techniques and associated equipment to examine and evaluate metals, ceramics, composites, films and other materials nondestructively.
