Integrated Membrane Systems for Biomass Processing

Biomass processing is a critical step in the production of liquid fuels using domestic renewable alternatives to petroleum-based transportation fuels. We are developing an integrated energy efficient process using microalgae that is suitable for the production of a variety of products including biodiesel and high value products derived from the protein and oil content of the biomass. Performance data on both polymeric and inorganic membranes were obtained on membranes with pore sizes ranging from 1 nm to 1 μm.
