Research Interest:

  • H. T. Lin's research activities span the areas on high-temperature fatigue and creep behavior of advanced ceramics, ceramic composites, and metal-matrix composites, evaluation of mechanical reliability and lifetime performance of complex-shaped ceramic components, environmental barrier coating development. His studies include the influence of high-temperature and high-pressure steam on the reliability of silicon-based ceramic systems. He is the author or co-author of over 70 technical publications in these fields.

Element 3.2.1.3. Fracture in Toughened Ceramics, Ceramic Technology Project. Investigated high-temperature creep deformation behavior of monolithic ceramics and whisker-reinforced ceramic composites. Developed the test methodology to evaluate the relationships between fiber/matrix interfacial characteristics, interface properties, and the mechanical properties of ceramic composite systems.
  • Auburn University (4/87-3/89): Ph.D. research assistant. Structural Materials Group, Metals and Ceramics Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Investigated the joining of helium-impregnated austenitic and martensitic stainless steels. Developed model of the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of helium bubbles that led to cracking and failure of weld joint during the welding of irradiated materials.
  • Auburn University (6/83-3/87): Graduate research assistant. Awarded full research assistantship to develop advanced materials for fusion energy applications. Thesis investigated the effects of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of (Fe,Ni)3V long-range ordered (LRO) alloys.
