Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant 1978-1989

University of Virginia Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics 1989-1990

Oak Ridge National Laboratory 1989-present

A staff member at the Oak Ridge facilities since 1978, he has participated with his close associates in pioneering fluorescence-based thermometry. This technique has seen use in internal fighter jet engines, heat pump efficiency studies, motor-surface measurements, the steel industry, and other applications. His other activities have included a wide variety of laser, optical and fiberoptic diagnostic investigations. He has held adjunct appointments at the Universities of Virginia (Engineering Physics) and Tennessee (Electrical Engineering and Physics Departments) He has coauthored about 80 papers. His current plans concern the development of phosphor thermometry, laser materials processing, new optical materials, and fiber sensor applications. He has 7 patents.
