A success story by the Transportation Technologies Group:
Melton Valley Storage Tank LLW Vaults–
Shipment of Entire Concrete Storage Vault
As an Approved IP-2 Package
The Melton Valley
Storage Tank (MVST) Concrete Vault project involves the design and
certification of the existing concrete vault as an Industrial
Package-2 (IP-2) package as an alternative to the additional costs
and personnel doses involved in leasing a shielded cask and removing
the concrete monoliths (i.e., high gamma activity LLW sludge
solidified in concrete) from the concrete vaults at the ORNL SWSA-6
area for shipment to the NTS for disposal. Transportation
Technologies staff developed and tested a "lid retention device" to
ensure that the lid would stay on the vault during transport. ORNL
also supported development of trailer modifications and tiedowns to
facilitate shipments to commence.
