599-616 (1996). Summary: Flocculation
and filtration of colloidal particles are examined in this paper. Hematite pseudocubical
particles of 1-mm diameter are synthesized and their removal efficiency by a high-gradient
magnetic filter is experimentally investigated. Experiments are conducted using a
cryogenic magnet of 6 Tesla maximum strength. A new approach of using magnetic seeding to
enhance separation of weakly magnetic particles is also investigated. A
particle-flocculation model is developed based on trajectory analysis.
