Air Velocity/Air Speed

The ORNL Metrology Laboratory provides a full suite of air velocity/air speed calibration capabilities to meet almost any requirement.  Laser Doppler Calibration photoCalibration capabilities include thermal anemometer, vane anemometer, propeller anemometer, swinging-vane anemometer, sonic anemometer, ultra-sonic anemometer, pitot tubes and laser-doppler anemometer.  Air speed/air velocity calibration ranges include low range (50-1260 ft/sec, 0.25-6.4 m/s) and high range (1260-9450 ft/min, 6.4-48 m/s).

The low air velocity/air speed range is fully accredited by thelaser doppler display photo National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) while the high range air velocity/air speed range is fully NIST-traceable.  Plans are to have the high range air velocity/air speed range added to the NVLAP scope of accreditation in mid 2012.
The low range air velocity/air speed calibrations are performed in a wind tunnel with a 12-inch X 12-inch (30.5 X 30.5 cm) cross-section test section which is capable of handling most thermal anemometer, vane anemometer and pitot tubes and many sonic anemometer, ultrasonic anemometer and propeller anemometer.

The high range air velocity/air speed calibrations are performed in a smaller wind tunnel with a 4-inch X 4-inch (10.2 X 10.2 cm) test section, capable of handling most thermal anemometer, pitot tubes and some mini vane anemometer.

Following are the ranges and best measurement capabilities for the high and low range air velocity/air speed calibration capabilities offered by the ORNL Metrology Laboratory.  To view the entire ORNL NVLAP scope of accreditation, please visit http://ts.nist.gov/Standards/scopes/2006590.pdf
