Timothy E. McKnight

Tim McKnight received a BS in Engineering Science from the University of Michigan in 1989 and an MS in Engineering Science/Fluid Dynamics from the University of Tennessee in 1996. He has been a staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory since 1989, initially working in the area of physical measurements, device characterization and sensor development (fluid flow, temperature, pressure, radiometry). In recent years, his research focus has shifted from physical measurements to biologically-oriented studies, specifically in the areas of cellular manipulation and monitoring. Research efforts have focused on bioengineering at the cellular level, including studies of radiation-induced permeabilization of the cellular membrane, plasmid and macromolecular delivery to cells and membrane irradiation studies for control of the proliferation of human T-cell leukemia.

Currently, Mr. McKnight's primary research involves developing and studying nanoscale devices for gene delivery and real-time intracellular chemical measurement and manipulation, including methods of modulating gene expression via nuclear-resident, nanostructured interfaces. He is very interested in applying these technologies for studying DNA damage and repair mechanisms, directed embryogenesis, and for realization of new approaches for directed biosynthesis. He is also excited to be working with a local startup company, Nanotek LLC, in the development of microfluidic platforms for rapid and efficient synthesis, purification, and evaluation of positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals.

During off hours, Mr. McKnight enjoys spending time with his two sons swimming, bicycling, hiking, and maintaining a small farm in the rolling hills of eastern Tennessee. He enjoys landscaping, keeping bees, water gardening, gardening, and fruit growing – but tends to not be very productive with the latter two.
