Detection of explosives on airline passengers: recommendation of the 9/11 commission and related issues. (CRS Report for Congress)
Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports and Issue Briefs, August 2006
Some of the underlying technology for passenger explosives trace detection was developed at Department of Energy national laboratories. Commercial equipment vendors using such technology under license have incorporated research performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory into equipment currently being procured by TSA for airport use.

Knoxville Biotech Makes Medical Breakthrough
PR Newswire, May 10, 2006
A burgeoning biotech industry cluster in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Innovation Valley in many cases builds upon discoveries at nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee. Several of the region's biotechs are involved in pharmacological discovery. Protein Discovery has developed cutting edge technology to prepare human serum for analysis by mass spectrometry.

Pocket-sized nerve gas protection for troops
The Engineer, April 10, 2006
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is teaming with Honeywell to develop a micro gas analyser the size of a mobile phone that combines a very small gas chromatograph with a tiny mass spectrometer. The researchers are testing the GC-MS sensor's ability to detect trace amounts of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a nerve gas simulant. Miniature GC- MS sensors could be worn by soldiers to help them detect a very low- level chemical threat and warn them to evacuate or sort the contaminated area in time to survive.

Lammert joins Stillwater to lead mass spec product
Laboratory Talk, UK, March 23, 2006
Stephen Lammert has joined Stillwater Scientific Instruments to lead development of a line of new mass spectrometers. Lammert's recent assignments include numerous lead R+D roles at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, including senior research staff member and as head of analytical spectroscopy section of the chemical and analytical sciences division. His experience in working for the Department of Defense and Department of Energy while at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will aid Stillwater's expansion into the homeland security marketplace.
