LANDSCAN^TM 2005 GLOBAL POPULATION DATASET

DESCRIPTION

This archive contains the alpha release of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's LandScan^TM 2005 Global Population Dataset. Please see the LandScan 2005 release page for descriptive information. Updates and corrections may still be made. If you should discover any problems or errors, please inform us at LandScan User Services.

The archive contains grids for the world and each of the six continents, excluding Antarctica, and a binary file that includes the entire world. For the grid archives, each of the zip files contains three folders: a file named for the continent that contains the ESRI GRID, an INFO folder, and a metadata folder. All of the folders must be extracted from the archive file into one new folder. Additionally, legend files for both ArcView 3.x and up and ArcGIS 8.x are included. The binary archive contains six files. These include the .flt floating point file, the header file, the projection file, and a Dbase table for use in determining the area of each cell in the corresponding binary file, and a readme file and documentation file.

DOWNLOADING DATA

While the LandScan^TM 2005 Dataset can be downloaded via the World Wide Web at www.ornl.gov/landscan, please note that all LandScan users are required to register before they can access the data. Files for download have been compressed using WinZip v10 in compatibility mode. Users should expect a substantial increase in the size of downloaded data after uncompression. Compressed and uncompressed file sizes for each of the continents are shown below.
