Research Experience and Interests

Mr. Karthik initially joined the Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) group at ORNL as a Summer intern and joined full time in June 2011.  He is currently one of the software developers for the BioEnergy Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF) and Strategic Materials Security Program (SMSP) projects.

Prior to joining GIST group, Mr. Karthik worked as a research application developer at Purdue University specializing in building cyber-infrastructure and web software for scientific research, education and collaboration. In EcoliHub project, a central online source for information about the bacteria Escherichia coli, he developed various components of front-end as well as back-end using Java, PHP, Joomla CMS, JavaScript, AJAX, LDAP etc. He built a focused search engine for E. coli by making heavy modifications to Nutch & Carrot2 framework. He was the sole developer from concept to release (complete architectural design & development of all components) in LitCloud (Literature Social Network) project - an innovative platform to harvest community-contributed literature references and leverage its "social engagement" to fight information overload and discover references, new leads and information that are of interest to the user.

His areas of expertise include proficiency with a vast array of programming languages, concepts and technologies especially web-based software design and development, database programming, full life-cycle software development  process, and search engine software.
