Research Experience and Interests

Mr. Johnson joined the predecessor to the Geographic Information Science and Technology group at ORNL in June 1978. His current responsibilities include: program manager for the Transportation Routing Analysis GIS (TRAGIS) and the Railroad Routing and Visualization Application (RRVA) models and is involved in a number of other rail transportation projects.

Over his years at ORNL, Mr. Johnson has been responsible for the TRAGIS model and the associated highway, rail, and waterway transportation network databases. TRAGIS is the accepted US Department of Energy routing analysis tool used for both risk assessment and shipment planning.  He also is responsible for development of the RRVA model and other associated projects for the Federal Railroad Administration. He also has been involved with transportation planning and security projects for the DOE Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. Mr. Johnson has also worked extensively on rail infrastructure and interdependency projects for the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.

Mr. Johnson areas of expertise include hazardous materials transportation modeling, rail transportation subject matter expert, GIS, applications programming, and project management.
