Research Experience and Interests

Mr. Basford joined the Geographic Information and Science Technology Group (GIST) in July 2012. He is currently on the Population Distribution and Dynamics Team and assists with the Population Density Tables project through imagery analysis and data collection and development.

Prior to joining the GIST group, Mr. Basford studied geography at the University of Tennessee, where he gained research experience in cultural and economic geography as part of a project examining the rise of globalization in India through the consumption of chicken. He also spent time working in dendrochronology and utilizing GIS software and cartographical techniques while studying a curriculum focused on human geography.

Mr. Basford is interested in using GIS applications to study various aspects of population and political geography, including examining the movement of people across borders, the propagation of illicit economic activities in border communities and mapping ill-defined international boundaries in urban areas that straddle contested territory. He is also interested in examining the evolution of national and political identity in separatist regions and the migration of people to and from separatist regions and their parent countries.
