QUICKGUN - 2 Stage Light Gas Gun Code
This code solves for the piston position and speed as well as the downstream gas pressure and temperature and pellet speed for a two-stage pneumatic pellet accelerating system (see figure below). The piston is accelerated by gas on the upstream(reservoir) side which compresses the gas on the downstream side which is ultimately used for pellet acceleration. Timescales are short enough that adiabatic processes are assumed. An approximate method of characteristics for flow with friction is used where a functional form for the Mach number is assumed at the breech. An average Mach number value of 0.3 works well in modelling ORNL data. This version of the code allows for leakage of gas across the piston. Only a single gas species is allowed. The code is described in ORNL/TM-1156 by Milora, Combs, Gouge and Kincaid. The conversion to Java and HTML was implemented by L.R. Baylor.
Results are plotted in another applet below the input and calculation applet. The graphics output uses the Graph2D Java Class by Brookshaw. The classes used are Graph2D, Axis and DataSet.
