Cryogenic System Improvement for HTS Applications

Develop capacity control for cryogenic cooling systems: i.e. efficient capacity variation of the refrigerator to match the instantaneous load, so that compressor power is not wasted (important for electric utilities)

  • Experiment on the existing Cryomech GB-37 unit with variation of the compressor bypass flow and helium charge pressure, to determine the effect on unit efficiency.
  • Consider design of an automatic charge pressure regulating system with a buffer tank and regulators.

System architecture research and design as well as evaluation of cryogenic cycles and requirements for HTS power applications

  • includes refrigeration cycle simulations

NASA Kennedy Space Center and industry develop low thermal loss insulation for many HTS cable, flexible pipes and other cryostats.
