| HUD/DOE Tennessee Energy Workshop for Public Housing Authorities The HUD/DOE Tennessee Energy Workshop for Public Housing Authorities was successfully conducted on Wednesday, August 30th at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Conference Center. The workshop was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Program, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Rebuild America Technical Assistance Program and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The workshop was designed to assist HUD Public Housing Authority Representatives with initiatives addressing energy efficiency, HUD headquarters’ energy action plan, and Public and Indian Housing energy action plan activities. fifty-one total attendees participated in the workshop including: 45 HUD/Public Housing Authority attendees, 1 TVA attendee and 5 Oak Ridge National Laboratory attendees. Jim Chaplin, Region IV HUD Energy Coordinator, gave a motivational and energizing opening presentation encouraging the use of Energy Star products in public housing. ORNL researcher, Mark Ternes (Residential Building and Equipment Research Group), provided the attendees with detailed information on performance contracting options, planning energy projects and common sense energy practices. Charles Barnett, U.S. HUD, educated attendees on PHA energy action plans. Shannon Cross of HUD’s Energy Star Initiative encouraged everyone to “make it happen, be practical and exhaust your alternatives.” A presentation by Pat Basham of the McMinnville HA detailed her organizations efforts over the years to make their public housing complex more energy and water efficient, including their awareness campaigns and efforts to affordable energy-efficient appliances. TVA presenter, John Proffitt, TVA’s Regional Marketing Manager for energy right® and Green Power Switch, gave an overview of TVA’s residential energy efficiency program. As a result of this workshop, John Proffitt is arranging for TVA to provide 1,000 compact florescent light bulbs to public housing authorities to be used in their offices, common rooms and public spaces.
