Mr. Randall F. Lind

Mr. Randall F. Lind is a senior development staff engineer in the Engineering Science and Technology Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He earned a B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois (1976) and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tennessee (1992). He began his career with Union Carbide Corporation where he developed automation systems for large chemical processing plants in the U.S., Puerto Rico and France. He came to ORNL’s Instrumentation and Controls Division in 1987 where he initially developed automatic controls and instrumentation for uranium metal casting and later led the development of an environmentally sealed robotic batch processor for uranium oxide reduction. Mr. Lind has developed and designed a number of special purpose robotic and mechanical systems. Recently he has focussed on human amplifiers and extenders including the USAF Next Generation Munitions Handler omnidirectional vehicle prototype. This high payload servo-hydraulic system is based on the novel ORNL patented "Holonomic Omnidirectional Platform" and was used to demonstrate advanced human-amplification for loading heavy weight munitions on fighter aircraft. Mr. Lind’s interests include sensors, controls, mechanism, materials, servo-hydraulics, 3D modeling and simulation.
