Mr. John C. Rowe

Mr. John C. Rowe has a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Oklahoma and a M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He has been working in controls and real-time systems for 27 years and has significant experience in systems integration, real-time controls hardware and software, distributed digital architectures, and development and integration of telerobotic systems. John has been influential in the development of many of the teleoperated systems designed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, starting in 1983 with the first digital force-reflecting servomanipulator, the M-2. He has received several technical and significant achievement awards for developments in telerobotic architectures and real-time controls and many of his publications are derived from that work. He is a senior engineer involved in the development of real-time control hardware and software.

In addition to his involvement with the M-2 force-reflecting manipulator starting back in 1983, John was the Lead electrical engineer for the Advanced Integrated Maintenance System (AIMS), involving the design and development of a control room, control consoles, electronics systems, human-machine interface, and system software for the ASM servomanipulator. He was program manager for ORNL’s participation in the USMC’s Ground-Air Telerobotic System program and the Lead Electrical/Controls engineer for the Laboratory Telerobotic Manipulator (LTM) project. The LTM was a dual-arm force-reflecting servomanipulator designed and implemented for NASA to use in research into future space applications. He was the lead controls engineer in the development of control system hardware and software for a teleoperated crane to be used in demonstrating more efficient rearming of patriot missile launchers for the U.S. Army. The most recent systems he has been involved with are the Next Generation Munitions Handler (NGMH) system, a high-payload, precision manipulator for loading munitions and also a new man-amplification research arm currently being assembled at the lab. In addition to projects involving remote manipulation, he has worked in the areas of human-machine interface design, remote laser surface mapping, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
