VERDE Operations
ORNL has developed a national visualization and analysis capability for DOE. This resource will enable real-time status of the electric grid and critical energy sectors to assist federal agencies in the coordination and response during major events such as wide-area power outages, natural disasters and other catastrophic events. Real-time geo-visualization capability characterizes the dynamic behavior of the electric grid across multi-regions, substantially mitigating the risk of and accelerating the recovery from a large area power disruption.
VERDE (Visualizing Energy Resources Dynamically on the Earth) is a platform that can be used to integrate different elements of visualization tools. For example, the North American SynchroPhasor Initiative (NAPSI) utilizes time-syncronized measurements of frequency, voltage, and current to provide real-time, wide-area situational awareness. This information can be integrated into VERDE to display the status of the transmission system over a wide area and calculate the "health of the grid in real time."
