Research Groups

The division’s 160 research, technical, and administrative staff are organized into nine technology-focused groups that specialize in R&D related to the creation, testing, integration, and application of science and technology (S&T) that support measurements and the consumption of measurements using appropriate modes of sensing at various spatial and temporal scales in a wide variety of physical environments. These groups are,

Electronics Research

  • Microelectronic Sysems Research - The MSR group performs research and development of circuits and systems involving custom micro- and nano-electronics where sensors and circuits are typically integrated into miniature and low-power electronic systems. Primary emphasis is on the creation of large-scale, mixed-signal application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC).
  • RF, Communications and Intelligent Systems - The RFCIS group performs R&D in robust communications, tracking and locating systems, and RF/microwave-based measurements. Core technical capabilities include advanced communications, unique cognitive radio designs, high-frequency electronics, novel antennas, and hardware-in-the loop modeling and simulation.

Sensors and Signals Research

  • Imaging, Signals, and Machine Learning - The ISML group specializes in R&D of imaging system, image processing, and pattern classification technologies for a variety of applications. The three primary application areas of this group are national security, biomedical imaging, and industrial processes.
  • Nanosystems and Structures - The NSS group performs R&D in the areas of MEMS and NEMS and nanomaterials including nanostructured surfaces. The group develops microfabrication and measurement techniques for micro- and nano-scale systems and structures, electronic, and photonic nanomaterials, and develops devices and sensors based on nanostructured  materials.
  • Sensors and Controls Research - The SCR Group performs R&D for novel sensors and sensor systems. The group works extensively in areas of chemicals and explosives detection, radiological and nuclear materials detection, process analytical measurements, and testing and analysis of sensors and measurement systems.

Integrated Systems Research

  • Dynamic Systems Analysis and Simulation - The DSAS group performs R&D primarily involving mechanical systems with main application areas being enrichment technology support and national security (non-proliferation programs). The group also performs mechanical system design, development, and testing.
  • Electronic and Embedded Systems - The EES group develops custom analog and digital circuits and systems, handheld portable instruments, data acquisition systems, performs integration of complex electrical systems, and custom electronic systems for harsh/special environments.
  • Robotics and Energetic Systems - RES research encompasses areas of robotics, human amplification machines, power transfer systems and actuators, and energy transformation in portable systems, to achieve high-power density, high-force density, and high efficiency in actuated systems.
