About Us
The Measurement Science and Systems Engineering (MSSE) Division, directed by Dr. Kenneth W. Tobin, was formed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on March 1, 2008. Our mission is to perform research and development in measurement science associated with electronics, sensors, signals, patterns, informatics, and communications to develop methods, devices, instruments, and systems that interact with the world to interpret data, provide understanding, and impart control. Our research supports programs in energy production and security, national security, biomedical engineering, U.S. competitiveness, and basic science.
Brief History of MSSE
MSSE has a rich history of scientific and engineering research, development, and technical support that cuts across all research divisions at ORNL and addresses many science and engineering efforts of importance to the nation. The composition of the division today began with a Laboratory consolidation of engineering science and technology capabilities across ORNL in 2001 under the leadership of UT-Battelle. At that time, the Energy Division, Engineering Technology Division, Instrumentation and Controls Division, and Robotics and Process Systems Division were consolidated into the Engineering Science and Technology Division (ESTD). By October of 2007, ESTD was home to 271 employees, numerous national user facilities, and laboratories located in 15 buildings on and off the campus.
To produce a more nimble R&D division with the ability to respond more quickly to the changing national landscape, in March 2008 ESTD was split into two new technology-focused organizations: MSSE and the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD). Today, MSSE has 130 research, technical, and administrative staff that are organized into nine technology-focused groups specializing in R&D related to the creation, testing, integration, and application of science and technology to the creation of new methods, devices, instruments, and systems. The division has an annual R&D budget of nearly $40M to support various missions of the U.S. DOE, other federal and nonfederal agencies, institutions and consortiums, and U.S. industry.
